The goal of the Hungarian Language and Cultural Studies scholarship is to improve the Hungarian language skills and cultural knowledge of young people of Hungarian origin who are citizens and residents of other countries (the so-called “Western diaspora”). The two-semester course takes place at the Balassi Institute in Budapest.

The Balassi Institute invites applications for a 9-month scholarship during the2016 academic year. Preference shall be given to applicants from the Southern Hemisphere. The scholarship is intended for individuals of Hungarian origin who are citizens of other countries, live outside of Hungary and wish to strengthen their language knowledge and cultural identity.

Young people, 18 years or older, are invited to apply. Volunteer work, references from post-secondary institutions, and any other activities related to Hungary or Hungarian culture, are taken into consideration in the selection of the applicants.

About the program:
The program consists of language and cultural studies and provides opportunities to actively explore Hungary and contemporary Hungarian culture. In the framework of cultural studies the students learn about history, literature, geography, folklore, art history and social issues. At the end of the program students take a final exam in the above subjects, defend their final essay, and take a Hungarian language exam that is officially recognized by the Hungarian government. (The level and type of the language exam is decided by the language skills examination board.)

For those students who wish to apply for credits in their post-secondary institution, the Balassi Institute provides detailed course descriptions in addition to the transcript.

Class attendance is mandatory. Should a participant miss classes without cause, or violate the Institute’s Study and Exam rules or Disciplinary Guidelines, the individual will lose the right to continue in the program and the right to reside in the Institute’s residence. Any individual who has been expelled from the program will have to return any scholarship money received up to that date.

Program duration:
9 months (February – June 2016, September – December 2016)

The scholarship includes:
• Full tuition fee
• 25,000 HUF/month stipend (currently approx. US $90/month)
• free accommodation at the Institute’s student hostel (2-3 persons per room)
• student ID (offering discounts)

Attention please! Due to legal changes the scholarship grant does not include a free health insurance.
Regarding health insurance, please see the attached information.

Deadline for applications:
October 22, 2015

The applications will be evaluated by October 30, 2015 and applicants will be notified about the results within 5 workdays.. Decisions on the applications are made by the Balassi Institute based on the recommendation of the Hungarian Scouts Association in Exteris. All decisions are binding. The Balassi Institute will not consider applications that are submitted after the deadline and/or are incorrect or incomplete.
The application process:

1. Registration
Applicants must complete the Balassi Institute’s online registration form ( A confirmation e-mail will be sent to you within 1 day of your registration. 2. Completion of application form
After your successful registration, sign onto
with the username and password you provided on the registration form. Download the application form (word document) and complete it electronically.

3. Required documentation and references:
• 300-word essay on why you would like to study in Hungary
• handwritten résumé
• copy of passport
• copy of transcripts and diplomas (signed or certified by the appropriate authorities)
• reference letter from a volunteer organization (e.g. scouts, church) or recognized individual
• proof of US $600 deposit (cost of two field trips)

4. Print and sign the application form.

5. Scan and upload it together with the required documentation and references onto

The applicant is responsible for the following expenses:
• Travel to and from Hungary.
• Food and personal expenses.
Note: Recommended monthly amount for food and personal expenses is approximately US$ 250.
• For non-European Union citizens: cost of health insurance. The Balassi Institute offers an optional health insurance. Should you choose it, the Balassi Institute will contribute 30,000 HUF.
• Language exam fee (ECL B2 or C1: approx. 25,000 HUF)*.
• Monthly student transit pass.*
• Student visa fee.
• Cost of two compulsory field trips.
• Cost of the entrance card: approx 2,000 HUF.*
• Administration fee of the Student ID: approx 2,000 HUF.*

The amounts indicated by (*) must be paid within two weeks after arrival.

The application process is not considered complete unless a deposit of US $600 for the mandatory field trips is included with the application documents. Method of payment: bank check or traveler’s check to the order of the Hungarian Scouts Association in Exteris, to be sent to the following address:

If the US $600 is sent by bank transfer, an additional $45 must be paid to cover bank expenses.

If the application is rejected, the Hungarian Scout Association in Exteris will refund the 600 USD deposit. If, after having accepted the scholarship, the applicant decides not to participate in the program, the Hungarian Scout Association in Exteris will refund 50% of the deposit, - provided the cancellation is made by January 15, 2016 at the latest. No refunds will be made after that date.
