Welcome to the opening of the exhibition

"Multiple Exposures. Memory of the Roma Holocaust - contemprary reflections"

(curated by Anna Lujza Szász)

on the 12th of December 2013 at 5 pm

at the Hungarian Institute (Piiskopi 2, Tallinn)

'Multiple Exposures. Memory of Roma Holocaust - contemporary reflections'

The exhibition focuses on the memory of the Roma Holocaust and approaches it from trans-generational point of view. It invokes the photo - more precisely, a photo of Erzsébet Horváth and the ID which serves as its direct context - as a vehicle of remembrance. The image talks for itself, however, in order to encourage, multiply the discourse and to create a discursive space around the photo we invited contemprary artists, writers, poets.

The focus of the exhibition is shifted from the gaze of the persecutors to the gaze of the successors, from voices to echoes.

Almost 70 years ago the Roma camp in Birkenau II/e was liquidated to make space for the Jewish deportees from Hungary. Approximately 1500 people who were able to work, were deported to Buchenwald, other 3000 were gased.
Why is it important to remember what happened? It might contribute to the formation of one´s identity, it might help to build a community, it might incorporate the history of the group into the history of Europe by discussing the ways in which Roma and non-Roma people lived together. It might also help to understand the present and the tensions it has to cope with.

Curator Anna Lujza Szász is attending the opening.

The exhibition is on view until 24th January, 2014.
